First off the tee: The Carolinas course where I fell in love with golf

The final bell sounded, signaling summer’s start.

From elementary school until my early high school days, my parents greeted my sister and me the same way — our car packed to the brim, with our dogs hanging their heads out a window and golf bags stored away in a rooftop cargo carrier — on the final day of school. A trip from Asheville to Nags Head awaited.

Crabbing and fishing, blistering sunburns and cannonball dives, PB&Js on the beach and countless climbs to the top of Cape Hatteras Lighthouse filled those weeks-long vacations. Yet the cross-state pilgrimage wasn’t complete without visiting Nags Head Golf Links.

It’s there, among the sand dunes and wild sea grasses and holes along the Roanoke Sound, that golf first captivated me like it has you and so many others throughout the Carolinas.

Each of you has a course like this that first endeared you to the sport. And at Golf.Carolinas.com, our staff composed of the Carolinas’ top golf writers will tell you each Wednesday about what’s new at your favorite courses, introduce you to courses you’ve missed and tell you some great stories.
